For some time I have been having pain behind my eyes. It might be one eye at the time, or both at the same time. If it was my left eye, it was usually creep over and then be in my right eye. I got to a point where I was so frustrated. I went to my ENT thinking it was my sinuses. He did a CT scan only to reveal, my sinuses were fine. He put me on an old antidepressant with a vitamin- the antidepressant was know to stop headaches or stop pain. I don't really remember. Well, a few days on that and I found myself in a fog. So much so, I didn't know what day it was one day. I stopped taking the medicine. Come to find out that was a side effect.

Eventually, I ended up having scan of my head- checked out fine. I remember last year going to my doctor and telling him of the pain and putting my foot down, I have to have something to stop this pain. I work and these headaches were putting me out for 2-3 days, at times. There were two times this year that I had one so bad I had to sleep, after school for 45 minutes before I could even drive home. There were even a few occasions I had to lay my head down on the table while the student were taking a nap. Well, this doctor read my history and because I have a history of migraines, said "we'll just say they are migraines and you take Topomax - a beta blocker usually used by those with seizures-which would prevent the headaches- and then Maxalt - for pain when I did get one. Well, I did get headaches now and then but because the Maxalt worked so well, I just made sure I had it with me at all times. Sometimes though I just didn't like that I had to take 2 or 3 in two days. When I was 12 I did start having typical migraines and I am aware that some migraines aren't typical but I still wasn't convinced that what I was having were migraines.

I have some friends at church who have been telling me about their experience with their chiropractor. Yeah right. If my medical doctor can't figure it out why should I think a chiropractor would be able to? Well, one morning I woke up with a headache, again and had to miss work. So I decided I would go see this chiropractor. He said he didn't know if he could help me but he would take x-rays of my head and neck and see. Well, he showed me a few things. Most of which didn't make much sense at the time. He put me on the exam table and started touching my neck. Before I said anything, and as soon as he touched my neck he said, "that is awful." My response was and the pain is excruciating. So, he gets me off the table and has me kneel down and lay my head on one side of this small bench. It took a few minutes for me to relax so he could adjust my ATLAS. I didn't really know what to expect in the days to come but I figured I'd give it a chance. I was just so sick and tired of these headaches and of being sick and tired. My neck was sore for a few days after that but not much else to speak of. He set me up on a program where I would go three times a week for 4 weeks- 2 times a week for 5 weeks- once a week for (?)months and 1 a month for (?) months. I don't have my paper with me. Well, it wasn't free and my insurance company doesn't cover this many visits in a year. They allow 20 and he wanted to see me 40. I decided to go with a chiropractor my insurance company would pay for so that is what I told him. He was especially nice and understood completely. Then he proceeded to let me in on some information about the insurance companies I was not aware of. He also informed me that he was the only Dr. in our town that was highly qualified to do what he does- adjust the atlas. So, Jimmy and I discussed it and discussed it for days. We really don't have that kind of money, I don't want to finance it. However, it is my health and isn't that worth something. And if it did by chance help, I wouldn't need the $60 worth of medicine each month.

Long story I know but here is the short ending..... I ended up staying with the specialist, they worked with me so I didn't have to finance- no the price didn't go down, I am just paying when I can. My atlas has been adjusted three times and I have stopped taking my topomax. I have had three headaches since but on a scale of 1-10 the headaches are a 3/4. Previously, a 10 and a 10+ at times. I am a believer. I was very skeptical at first but after doing some reading and understanding of how the body works, I wish everyone would go. There is a difference in an Upper Cervical chiropractor and a regular chiropractor. With the UC, xrays are a standard, otherwise he wouldn't know what to adjust if anything. Yes, I will continue to see him. How long after my program is over, I don't know. But the way I see it is, we get our oil changed in our cars and tune ups- this is just a tune up for something much more important, MY BODY!! Oh yeah, he didn't fix my headaches, he fixed what was causing them. Basically my head wasn't on straight but I think now it is or at least moving in the right direction.

Google Upper Cervical chiropractors and you will get some great info. You tube has a great clip of Montel Williams talking about his experience. Check it out. (His doctor used a machine to adjust his, mine used his hand.)

I am not against medical doctors or taking medicine. They have helped me with many of my problems in the past. This is just what worked for me and my situation this time, after seeing three medical doctors. I would also say if the chiropractor doesn't or isn't working for you don't hesitate to see your medical doctor. Thanks for letting me share and taking the time to read.

Glad this worked out for you!

I'm not the person who has a bad experience and jumps on a bandwagon against something, but I did not have a good experience with a chiropractor here. He never once x-rayed my back and still insisted after weeks of excruciating pain that I had "Piriformis Syndrome." When nothing he did or suggested helped, I went to an orthopaedic doctor and he immediately diagnosed me with a ruptured disc, following up with an x-ray and MRI to confirm.

All of that to say, sometimes when you do not get relief from a chiropractor, you might want to use common sense and get to a medical doctor. Had I kept listening to the chirpractor, I would still be hurting and possibly have permanent nerve damage from not having anything done about it. :)

I've seen people who are so convinced by a chiropractor and so against any kind of drug that they completely swear off medical doctors. Or some who have a bad experience with a medical doctor and don't trust any of them. (Of course, I know you aren't of that mindset.) I've also seen that mode of thinking applied to a lot of different things. Balance is the key!

Tricia I believe you on the UC chiropractor. We just recently had one open an office in our town and everyone of his patients just sing his praises! My sister-in-law just swears by his procedures, and her children even go to him. She also said he is just so uplifting and postitive. I am glad your migraine are gone, maybe my husband should visit our doctor it may help. Thanks for posting this. I hope you are enjoying your summer break.

Hi there, I'm new to blogging and came across your blog... I have had migraines ever since I reached puberty... the monthly ones mostly. About 6 months ago I started having them like crazy; went the topomax and maxalt route too. Topomax gave me serious tremors (very weird). Maxalt works but it's a strong drug. I saw a thing about coffee giving migraines and decided to give it up. Haven't had a migraine in the month since I stopped. Do you drink coffee? (I miss it sooooo much!!)
